Pilgrimage of the Book

A full size reproduction of Gospels and Acts from The Saint John’s Bible is available for churches to use on loan from the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library (HMML).  Churches may make arrangements with the HMML education and outreach director to host the book at their site for use in liturgy or worship services.

There is no cost to use the book in worship.

 Churches are asked to:

·         Identify one person in the church who will assume direct responsibility for the reproduction book while it is on site.

·         Provide proof of insurance coverage for the book while in their possession.  The replacement value of the reproduction book is $35,000.00.

·         Agree to cover replacement costs if book is unreasonably damaged while in their use.

·         Pick up and return the book on prescheduled days directly from HMML.

·         Participate in a brief transport, packing and handling inservice before using the book. This is usually done at the time of pick-up.

·         Provide a secure (locked) storage location at the church for when the book is not in use.  Store the book in its accompanying case when not in use.

·         Ensure a proper support structure for when the book is used in proclamation. This is noted as many churches do not have large enough lecterns, ambos or pulpits designed to accommodate such a large book.  The Hill Museum & Manuscript Library has a large wooden ambo that may be borrowed to support the book if necessary.

·         Ensure that book is never left unattended on display.  Please do not allow guests to turn pages at will.   Book may be displayed if a trained host is always present.  A trained host wearing gloves may turn pages for guests to view.

Many churches – both Catholic and Protestant – have been signing up to use the reproduction book.  Special occasions such as the anniversary of a church’s founding, a special event such as confirmation, or in honor of Reformation Sunday have all been common reasons for churches to request the use of the volume.

Some churches have arranged to have the book in use the same weekend as a planned presentation or book arts fair is scheduled to take place.
