Day of Immersion

An all day experience featuring components of both of the above sessions as well as live demonstrations, hands-on stations and more time for participants to go more deeply into the project and its art. 

Day of immersion may include: 

 

Display of Reproductions

 

  • reproductions on easels

  • eight traveling reproductions augmented with additional framed images from Pentateuch

  • host in area to offer explanations

Stations – ongoing throughout the day

 

Calligraphy demonstrations

  • calligrapher demonstrating and explaining as he or she works.

Quill making

  • demonstrator cutting and explaining quills

  • tie into their use in the SJB

Gilding

  • demonstrator showing process of using gold leaf/ illumination

Hands on calligraphy explorations

  • large area with volunteers

  • supplies such as inks, quills, paper vellum

  • participants explore writing with quills

  • possibly a calligrapher demonstrating on chart and participants following

Calligrapher writing guest names

  • calligrapher at a station

  • writes guest names on give away book marks

Vellum Samples

  • vellum samples at table

  • host explains process of preparing vellum and use of vellum SJB

Handwriting Sample

  • real page of SJ Bible

  • host to explain

Full Size Facsimile

  • host turning pages, offering some explanations

Continuous Looping of  In the Beginning

  • five minute video shown repeatedly

 

Sessions – offered at specific times throughout the day

 

Visio Divina

  • guided CIT format Bible visual process focusing on one art image from SJ Bible

  • offered twice

1.            11:00 – 12:00

2.             1:30 – 2:30

  • Host Site needs to  pre-register participants for each session

  • Max 40 people per session

 

Psalms

  • explanation of images used in Psalms

  • 15 – 20 minute explanations

  • offered four times: 

1.            10:30

2.            11:30

3.            1:30

4.            2:30

  • No number limit or pre-registration required

 

Process of The Saint Johns Bible

  • tells the story who, what, why, when, where, how,  etc. of  the SJB

  • offered twice

1.            11:00 – 11:45

2.            1:30 – 2:15

  • no number limit or pre-registration required

Day Schedule:

 

Time: 

8:00 – 10:00 set up

10:00 – 3:00 Day of Immersion event

3:00 – 4:30 take down

 

Audience Size:  150 – 300 people

 

Host Site Provides:  Multiple spaces for programming (6 - 7 rooms)  8-12 volunteers, physical set up of spaces including various tables and chairs, lunch for participants, stipends for artists, set up and take down support, publicity, pre-registration work and registration work

 

SJU Provides:  three presenters, materials, handouts, display materials, artists and all programming content. 

 

Costs: A minimum of a $500.00 honorarium to the Bible project is requested plus all mileage costs paid at 48.5 cents per mile for SJU staff.    (An average trip to the Twin Cities runs between $70.00 and $80.00) Each calligraphy artist is paid $100 for the day. ($300 - $500 total artist costs) Lunch costs for artists and SJU staff and any costs for overnight accommodations (if necessary) are paid by the host site
