Archbishop Harry Flynn Honored with
Rare, Fine Art Reproduction of The Saint John’s Bible

Monumental manuscript stands more than 2 feet tall and 3 feet wide when open

WHAT: In honor of his upcoming retirement, Archbishop Harry Flynn will be recognized with a rare, full-size reproduction of The Saint John’s Bible on April 24, 2008, at the Cathedral of Saint Paul.

Saint John’s University and Abbey and the Frey family of Minneapolis will present Flynn with the first completed volume of the Heritage Edition of The Saint John’s Bible. The full-size reproduction is signed by Donald Jackson, the artistic director of The Saint John’s Bible, and is approximately 2 feet tall by 3 feet wide when open and weighs about 20 pounds.

The Heritage Edition of The Saint John’s Bible is a gift to Archbishop Harry Flynn from Saint John’s University. The gift was made possible through the generosity of the Eugene and Mary Frey family as a token of their high regard and esteem for the Archbishop, and in celebration of his more than 11 years of pastoral service and leadership as the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis.

  • The presentation is open to the media and there will be a designated media area for television cameras.
  • First Minnesota photo opportunity of the bound Wisdom volume (the first volume) of the Heritage Edition of The Saint John’s Bible.

BACKGROUND: Through the Heritage Program, individuals and artistic, religious and cultural institutions can experience and share the only full size, limited edition, signed and numbered reproductions of The Saint John’s Bible. More information is available online at www.HeritageEdition.com.

With more than 1,150 pages and 160 illuminations, The Saint John’s Bible is the first handwritten and illuminated Bible commissioned by a Benedictine monastery since the invention of the printing press. Saint John’s University has partnered with world-renowned calligrapher Donald Jackson, senior scribe to Her Majesty the Queen’s Crown Office at the House of Lords in London, England, to create this masterpiece.

To spread its message of inclusion, The Saint John’s Bible is being written in English and includes powerful illuminations that place the manuscript clearly within our modern age. Episcopalian, Protestant and Jewish advisors have helped to form the vision of The Saint John’s Bible, serving as consultants and as members of committees dedicated to assisting Donald Jackson in the creation of The Saint John’s Bible.
