MEDIA ADVISORY:
LIBRARY OF CONGRESS EXHIBITION
SHOWCASING THE SAINT JOHN’S BIBLE
TO PREVIEW ON OCT. 5
WHAT: Press briefing and opportunity to preview “Illuminating the Word: The
Saint John’s Bible,” a traveling exhibition that opens in the Northwest
Gallery of the Library’s Thomas Jefferson Building on Oct. 6 and will be on
view through Dec. 23.
WHEN: Thursday, Oct. 5, from 10 a.m. to noon. This private event is open
only to the press.
WHERE: Whittall Pavilion, ground floor of the Thomas Jefferson Building, 10
First Street S.E., Washington, D.C.
WHO: Representatives from the Library of Congress, Saint John’s University
and Abbey in Collegeville, Minn., and other supporting organizations, along
with Donald Jackson, master calligrapher and artistic director of The Saint
John’s Bible, will make remarks prior to tours of the exhibition.
Commissioned by Saint John’s Abbey and University, The Saint John’s Bible is
a contemporary work created in the tradition of medieval manuscripts and the
first handwritten, illuminated Bible to be commissioned by a Benedictine
monastery since the advent of the printing press more than 500 years ago.
The Library’s exhibition will feature selections from the first three
completed volumes of The Saint John’s Bible, along with original artist
tools, sketches and materials from Jackson’s scriptorium. An ancillary
display of materials includes several priceless volumes that are
representative of the Library’s extraordinary collection of Bibles. A
multimedia presentation will give visitors a brief overview of illuminated
Bibles and Bible-related works in the Library’s Rare Book and Special
Collections Division.
Organized by The Minneapolis Institute of Arts and Saint John’s University,
the exhibition and its national tour are made possible by Target. The
Library of Congress exhibition of “Illuminating the Word” is made possible
by the Allbritton Foundation.
